While out and about, salvaging timber and materials for his handmade creations, Mr RY would occasionally stumble across varying items. The once discarded bits & bobs will end up back here at the Yard; some that Mr RY enjoys restoring to their former glory and other items... simply a little bit quirky, that we think deserve new homes.

All continuing the eco-friendly ethos of Reusing, Recycling & Recreating at the Yard.

"Singer Station"

When Mr RY salvaged these cast iron Singer legs, he knew they would be for something special. The solid piece of reclaimed Malaysian hardwood was shaped by hand to resemble three chunky planks, then battered with a chain to give a more aged, distressed look - to tie in with the industrial, vintage legs. Stained with ebony and american walnut wood stain and sealed with lashings of 50/50 teak and linseed oils, to highlight the stunning grain and colours. This piece would suit a number of uses such as a work station or breakfast bar.

INTERESTING FACT

In identifying the year of manufacture, we discovered the legs (SIMANCO: Singer Manufacturing Company, serial number 46674) are from 1861. The first treadle sewing machine was conceived by Isaac Merritt Singer in 1850 and the first machines were manufactured under Singer Manufacturing Co. The first serial number for which records are available is 611000 (1871) with logbooks from before that period being lost. Before electric motor drive, these cast iron stands supported the treadle mechanism.

Vintage "Wee Pews"

Rescued by Rekindled Yard, these small school chairs saw many a young one through classes over decades and yet, while showing clear signs of wear, still solid little items with plenty of life left in them!
Tubular metal frame and plywood seat and back, these stacking chairs were given a new lease of life with a gentle sand and seal - ready for their new home.

Vintage Brewery Funnel Copper Pendant Lights

July 2017

Cleaned and polished whilst still retaining bags of character, these funnels were originally used to filter alcohol such as beer and wine. Sprayed with four layers of clear lacquer to keep from dulling - these beauties will retain their copper sheen! This industrial yet elegant pair will suit a variety of spaces, from a kitchen/diner at home to a restaurant, cafe or bar! Vintage chains used for hanging along with 1920s style electrical cord plus standard ES fitting lights. Come with two ceiling rose hooks for installation (see pic).

c.1930's G.E.C General Electric Company Desk Lamp with brass Art Deco Clam Shell shade, made in England. Fully adjustable goose neck stem arm, which holds in any position.
Nice base, polished back to an industrial finish whilst still retaining bags of character.
Rewired & new internal fitting. Stunning lamp, hard to find in this condition.

Restoration - Extending Vintage Oak Table

May 2017

Of unknown origin, this piece was rescued by Mr RY and restored to reveal its natural beauty. Sanded back to raw timber and sealed with refined bees wax (jacobean dark oak).

The four chair seats have been recovered with a neutral hessian look fabric - ready for a new home. Second set of photos show the table "before" and during restoration.

Salvage - Vintage TanSad Industrial Office / Workshop / Machinist Chair

A handsome example and iconic design, set on a tubular metal frame with a height adjustable seat and 360 degree swivel-action. The chair is in original used condition – having some markings and surface patina, adding character to the item. Industrial metal, height adjustable sewng stool.

Restoration - Rocking Chair

This rescued old rocking chair had seen better days - with broken and missing parts, Mr RY knew that with a little TLC, it would be a great gift for Mrs RY's birthday and so it began... As it was a bit battered, Mr RY had to make new cross members for the chair base, so he fashioned a piece of french oak with his planer then sanded by hand to shape & fit. All the parts were then painstakingly sanded and smoothed (nobody likes a splinter on their bottom!) Next came the homemade base stain... wire wool, rusty nails & vinegar all mixed together and left to sit for 3 days: "iron acetate" - which essentially chemically burns the timber as it is acidic and reacts with tannins in the wood. As you can see from the photos, this mixture soaks into the timber yet accentuates the gorgeous grain rather than covering it. Finally, to seal - a mixture of teak and boiled linseed oil. Hey Presto... Mrs RY's Birthday gift complete! "Rock on Tammy" written in the accompanying card!

Restoration - Flip Top 1920s Dining Table

This solid oak old table was saved and sanded back to the stunning original timber before being sealed in danish oil.
Dating back to the 1920s, this extending refectory farmhouse table converts from a full size dining table to half the size plus storage space and a drawer.

NB: Helping Mr RY on this project, you'll notice the lesser spotted "Mr RY Jnr" in the photos!
